Yes, I have a big style crush on Erin Wasson. If you’re not familiar with her, please allow me to introduce you. With a successful modeling career that’s spanned 25 years, Erin has graced countless runways and top magazine covers as well as been the face for many a brand and ad campaign (like Gucci, Valentino, Chanel). She’s also a stylist and art collector as well as an entrepreneur with her own line of jewelry and boots.
With her free-spirited, rocker chic gypsy vibe, Erin exudes laid-back, effortless cool. Like she’s not working to be cool, she just is. I definitely have a thing for her beachy, sun-kissed tousled locks and her “just running an errand/walking the dog” street style. But there’s definitely more, Erin’s home interiors also reflect an equally as enviable soulful, eclectic style.
From her wardrobe, to her Malibu digs to her Venice Beach abode to her NYC apartment, it’s just all so good! Erin manages to put it all together, creating an aesthetic with lots of edge, interest and style. It’s all an imperfect curation, a little undone, with some well worn boots thrown into the mix. Erin is a Texas gal, so count on a little cowgirl too.
Here are some of my favorite Erin fashion moments, followed by her every evolving, soulful abodes.

Well, we’re officially in February now, the shortest month of the year that seems like the l o n g e s t month. Is …
Yes, yes + yes to all of the faux fur coats! I’m already feeling all warm and fuzzy just writing that. The textured goodness of these statement pieces adds a touch of style and luxury, immediately elevating an outfit. And let’s be real, they are just stylish and fun to wear, not to mention some of the coziest coats I own.
Over the years, faux furs have become closet stables. You cannot go wrong adding several of these to your wardrobe. Whether you opt for classic brown or black, a sherpa, an animal print or one of the various colors, the faux fur is versatile and can be dressed up or down.
So, please summer, be gone already as I’m patiently (kind of) waiting over here for colder weather so I can break out all of my faux fur coats. By the way, I’ve been known to pair one of mine with flannel pajama pants too! And, I’m always up for adding a couple more to my collection… eyeing some of the 21 styles below. Which is your favorite?

We’re those people who have been known to make travel plans based solely on stylish lodging. It’s no wonder the recent opening of the Hotel Saint Vincent caught our attention. Surely set to become one of the best hotels in New Orleans or at least in my design mind. In all of its spectacular wonder, grandeur, style and glory has got us itching to plan an excursion down to New Orleans for a visit. It looks like the perfect place to “pass a good time”. Disappointingly, we didn’t get our invite to the hip, it-krewe opening featuring indie rock singer, songwriter, St. Vincent, but hey, we’re not ones to hold a grudge. How about next time?
As an interior designer, this hotel is the very best kind of eye candy. Inspired by 70’s Italian design, Lambert McGuire Design (love me some Liz Lambert) put a modern mark on a NOLA historic property that originally opened back in 1864 as a children’s orphanage. In the renovation and design process, there was absolutely no attention to detail spared in creating the resulting eclectic, decadent, magical vibe. From the colorful, bold patterned Vousta wallpapers to the dark, moody Farrow and Ball painted walls to the mix of vintage and modern art and furnishings, it is an intoxicating, seductive expression of both the feminine and the masculine, and the intersection where the old and new worlds meet, in the coolest kind of way.
Hotel Saint Vincent, you’re on our radar and our where-to-stay list. Laissez les bon temps rouler… We’ll see you soon!

After days of deliberation, we just cancelled our vacation to Mexico. The one where we’re supposed to leave in less than two weeks… insert long sigh. Now we’re scrambling to pull together a replacement trip. Long story short – with Mexico’s rising COVID numbers and low vaccination rates coupled with travel requirements and restrictions, we decided to bag international travel and stick with something domestic right now. Oh yeah, and we’re traveling with an unvaccinated kiddo who has asthma. Just doesn’t seem worth the worry and risk. I think vacation is supposed to be relaxing,
The past couple of days we’ve been plugging away researching beach destinations that check all of our boxes. In the eyes of my ten year old, I’m not sure anywhere else will compare to a stay at the Finest Playa Mujeres so his little box may be harder to check. Our U.S. search started more broad, including Hawaii, both east and west coasts as well as the Gulf of Mexico, before deciding to focus on east coast destinations. Not surprising, booking a family vacation a couple of weeks out limits your options, especially when you have certain accommodation criteria/standards (code for designer who requires stylish lodging).
After coming up empty handed in the southern states, we shifted our focus to the northeast beaches. Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket have been on our vacation radar for years. While exploring the possibility of Montauk, I stumbled upon Block Island. We’ve never heard of this place. Just 14 miles east of Montauk this Rhode Island barrier island is brimming with a deep, rich history and an interesting, diverse landscape. Formed by deposits of the lower edges of two glaciers over 120,000 years ago, the small island was discovered by a Dutch explorer, Adrian Block, in 1614. I won’t bore you with all of the historical details, but let’s just say I did a little deep dive into Block Island. Down the rabbit hole I went!
At this point, I’m madly in love with this romantic, idyllic little island. Next, I google lodging, quickly spotting the images of the newly renovated, stylish Block Island Beach House. This hotel has quite the history of it’s own dating back to the late 1800s. Beginning as a private residence for the island doctor, the structure has a storied past, having experienced additions, renovations and iterations over the years. With it’s eclectic mix of furniture, wall papers, lighting, art and accessories, the boutique hotel is the epitome of bohemian surf shack style. It’s exactly our kind of of place to hang and lose track of time. And, who couldn’t use all the casual cool beachy vibes?
After playing around with our dates, available rooms and ferry reservations, I sadly couldn’t get the stars to align for a last minute trip to the Block Island Beach House. I even stood on my head and said a prayer. Room availability for a family is somewhat limited so it’s duly noted this is one of those places that requires some advanced planning, perhaps six months to a year out. The hotel also operates on an abbreviated season and ferry service follows suit. Regardless, Block Island is now on our list of places to visit. And when we do, we will definitely be staying in style right here! In the meantime, the search for our vacation destination continues. Please wish us luck… we’ll be heading somewhere in less than two weeks. Let’s go!

The crushing all started way back in 2009/2010… way before her HBO reality/documentary show, “Stylish with Jenna Lyons,” hit the airwaves. If you didn’t already know, Jenna Lyons is actually the woman who made J. Crew cool. She was responsible for adding a little personality and a lot of twist to a mainstream, otherwise bland brand… yawn. After her departure I might add, J. Crew, you’re right back there.
Jenna’s no one-trick pony either. She really caught my attention when I discovered we share a love for interior design. Her Brooklyn townhouse was widely featured in various design publications. Who could possibly forget her ink black painted bedroom and adjoining bathroom walls? Inspired by her walk on the dark side, I (along with droves of other people), painted my bedroom, obviously, black! Several years ago, Jenna renovated and designed a very different, but equally as covetable SoHo apartment. Some of my favorite features are the green hallway, the brass kitchen cabinets, the pink living room sofa and that over-the-top opulent marble bathroom (insert drooling emoji).
Her epitomize style is one part prep, one part funk, one part classic, one part trendy with a gracious side of quirky. Jenna is a tall walking study in contrasts, and she always manages to pull it off – and together. She successfully projects this oh so effortless chic. Ms. Lyons’ style encompasses more than just her clothes and home decor though, it’s also an attitude and personality. It’s the entire package – the glasses, the long legs, her shoe collection, her sense of humor, the honesty with a side of F-bombs and her seemingly kind heart. It’s all of this that makes her so darn lovable and enviable.
Anyone else been a long time crushing on Jenna Lyons?

Let’s talk design! I mean honestly, when are we NOT talking design? As our new Black House Blue Sky home is coming together, we’ve had people ask how we would describe the style. After all, it is an observable departure from our previous 5th Street house.
When we were dreaming and creating our mood/vision boards early last year, we weren’t even thinking in words, only in images. This is usually how it unfolds for most designers. We found ourselves drawing inspiration Scandinavian farmhouses and European barns with their more traditional shapes juxtaposed with modern, expansive windows and black industrial materials. And in this same vein, we knew we wanted a home that tells a more worn, rustic, lived in story… a black modern haven, tucked within the lush green surroundings, capable of withstanding the test of time with the wear and tear of family life. Maybe this imagined place becomes even more beautiful over time with its patina.
Speaking from experience, building a new house with the worn warmth of an old house while simultaneously maintaining a modern design aesthetic can be a little tricky. In most cases, it’s more expensive to make the new look old, especially if it’s done well. The materials and labor typically cost more. Balancing the old and the modern is also super important. A defined budget helps guide decisions for sure. From the beginning, we knew the importance of being purposeful and selective in our approach, making design decisions and spending where we believed it would be the most impactful, and where we’d get the most design bang for our buck. For this reason, we relied heavily on organic finishes, textures and selections to achieve our style goals. From the raw concrete floors to the use of reclaimed wood to the marble kitchen wall to the understated, industrial lighting to the mosaic and terrazzo bathroom tile floors, these combined design elements create surfaces and interiors that are both rustic and modern. And, most of our selections, I might add, were in budget!
Even with its rustic vibe, our new project is still modern, albeit decidedly different than anything we’ve done to date. The BHBS aesthetic continues to be defined, shaped and honed by our experiences. We’re always most inspired by travel, art, photography, nature and well-loved treasures sourced from antique and vintage stores. In more recent years, we’ve become increasingly more obsessed with European design. Generally speaking, in the past we’ve described our interior design aesthetic as modern eclectic as we love more classic modern finishes paired with an eclectic mix of collected and curated interiors. Our new abode will reflect this collective inspiration, no doubt, but will be expressed in a different way based on our evolving design aesthetic and lifestyle goals.
Perhaps our new home style can be described as rustic Scandinavian modern or industrial farmhouse or industrial chic. Or at least, that’s the best phrasing we’ve come up with so far! We’re visually preoccupied over here and rely more heavily on images to convey a style and mood, but we’re always up for help with the descriptive words! Here are some of our favorite images we’ve drawn major inspiration from throughout the design build process. How would you describe the style? Please drop us a comment below!

Ahhh, the arrival of spring with all of its splendor… the bright green lushness, vegetable garden planting season, the warmer temps AND maxi dresses! This time each year they make their way to the front of my closet, ready for rotation. Whatever your style, I consider these to be a wardrobe stable. It’s my go-to spring and summer outfit, being super comfortable and easy to wear. They work equally as well with trainers, sandals and flip flops. Add accessories and, with little effort, you have a stylish, pulled together look.
Spring is and has felt pretty different this year with the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s easy to get weighed down by the heaviness of everything. The beauty that comes with the changing seasons and the creativity of fashion brings a little joy to my corner of the world and a much needed break from our current reality. I typically add a couple of new pieces each season to freshen up my wardrobe, but with all of the looming uncertainty, I will mostly be shopping in my closet and using what I already have. That strategy actually works fine for me as I rarely wear clothes “hot off the rack”. My wardrobe is a collection of newer and vintage pieces, some of which I’ve had in my closet for over 20 years and still wear.
Since most of us aren’t leaving the house, but for essential needs, getting dressed in anything but pajamas and leisure wear may not be top of mind for you. I totally get it and can relate. For me, in these times, I’m finding putting on real clothes several times a week completely changes my energy and lifts my spirits. Who couldn’t use a little boost right about now? So, I’m quarantined at home, sheltering in place and dreaming about maxi dresses! It’s a nice, albeit brief distraction. Here are some of my favorites from my Pinterest “fashion inspiration” board, mostly from years past, and so many are out of my budget. But again, I’m dreaming!

One Accessory
Are you bored with your wardrobe and don’t want to spend a lot of money purchasing new clothes or shoes? Or are looking for ways to energize your wardrobe and step up your fashion game? Well, do I have an inexpensive, stylish solution for you… scarves! You might be thinking scarves are from another era, no longer en vogue. Maybe your mom, grandmother or Great Aunt Pearl wore them, and you never imagined yourself sporting one. Perhaps you just don’t think of yourself as a scarf person. They’ve never fit your style. I get it! I will say that I see the scarf as a classic accessory that can fit anyone’s personal style and budget. And as beautiful as they are, I’m not talking about an Hermes or other pricey designer brands. I don’t believe I’ve ever paid over $30 for a scarf, and most often, mine are in the $10-$12 price range, less if it’s a really good, lucky vintage score. If you’re willing to try something outside of your norm, a scarf can be a fun place to experiment with your style and expand your wardrobe without the big dollar signs.
I’ll Take The Scarves
From an early age, I was surrounded by stylish people – my mom, my grandmother, aunts, a neighbor and countless friends. Many of them wore scarves, each in their own unique way. Without a doubt, the inspiration from my childhood has influenced my style and design aesthetic today. I’m definitely a scarf gal. It is one accessories that I cannot live without, a wardrobe staple! I have a treasure trove of new and vintage scarves in all different shapes, sizes, textures, colors and patterns that has grown in number over the years. I have been a devotee of these small, magical swatches of fabric since my late teens.
The Style Magic
A scarf is impactful in that it can easily transform an outfit and a collection can enhance a wardrobe. A very basic outfit can be elevated by adding a beautiful floral or graphic printed scarf. They can be worn in so many different ways. Scarves are relatively inexpensive, providing a lot of style bang for your buck. For all of these reasons, it’s the one accessory that everyone should have in their closet, both women and men. Minimal space is needed to accommodate a scarf collection as they can be displayed in small baskets or tucked away in a dresser drawer.
So, give the often unappreciated and ignored scarf a chance! Start by purchasing just one or bring the scarves you own out of hiding… play around and get creative! You may even thank me later!

A Scarf Worn Seven Ways
This Madewell striped bandana (as they call it) was only $12.50 (and it sold out before I could get this posted!). The size and shape of your scarf will determine how you can wear it. This one is a square which tends to provide the most styling options.
